Buying fabric online can feel daunting — you can't touch it, hold it up to the light, or drape it over your arm. But with a few simple things to look out for, you can shop with confidence and get exactly what your project needs.
1. Check the fabric composition
Always read the fibre content. 100% cotton behaves very differently to a cotton-poly blend — it presses better, breathes better, but may shrink more. Knowing what's in your fabric helps you care for it correctly and choose the right one for your make.
2. Pay attention to the width
Most fabric is sold by the metre, but widths vary — commonly 112cm or 150cm. A wider fabric means you may need less of it. Always check the width before calculating how much to buy, especially for larger projects like curtains or coats.
3. Read the pattern requirements first
Before you fall in love with a fabric, check what your pattern recommends. Some patterns specifically call for woven or stretch fabrics — using the wrong type can affect the fit and finish of your finished make.
4. Order a sample if you're unsure
If you're committing to several metres, it's worth ordering a sample first. It lets you check the colour (screens can be deceiving), the weight, and the drape before you buy in bulk.
5. Think about shrinkage before you cut
Pre-wash your fabric before cutting, especially natural fibres like cotton and linen. What arrives as 2 metres could become noticeably less after its first wash — and you don't want that surprise after you've already cut your pattern pieces.
